Making Public Histories
Evening Lecture
Thursday 18th March 2010, 7- 8.30pm
David Heathcote is a design historian, writer, curator and broadcaster. In this lecture he will discuss the ways in which the requirements of different media – whether exhibitions, television programmes or publications – shape the ways that history can be told.
History is almost invariably something that we gain understanding of
through its articulation in the public domain. Most historians,
however, are woefully unprepared for the work necessary to convert
their research into something that the public can read, listen to or
view.
Historians rarely suspect, when venturing from the quiet world of
the University into the realm of public history, that what awaits them
are a vast array of good reasons as to why what they want to state
cannot be conveyed as they propose. From the length of lines and legal
constraints on seemingly innocent material to the necessity for the
historian to appear naked before the audience to tell the story, the
public realm has much in common with the gladiatorial arena.

Women in Chintz: Textile design as a profession for women in the 1920s
Evening Lecture
Thursday 24th June 2010, 7-8.30pm
Keren Protheroe looks at the work of female textile designers of the 1920s.
By the 1910s more women than ever were attending art classes at London’s Schools of Design and Technical Colleges, but how did they go on to earn their living? This talk looks beyond the well-known work of the Omega Workshops and Footprints to reclaim a lost generation of modern women who also exploited their art-education to forge careers as professional designers.
Illustrated with the work of Winifred Mold, Dora Batty, Minnie McLeish and Madeleine Lawrence this talk will explore the fashionable ‘everyday’ floral fabrics of furnishing and dress in the 1920s. In doing so it will examine the irresistible lure of the eclectic range of styles on offer, be they exotically oriental, daringly futuristic or simply nostalgically English. How did the quintessentially feminine world of the modern department store collide and collude with traditionally masculine world of the design studio?
Tickets: £7 full price, £5 concessions, includes refreshments.
