A Passion for Painted Pattern: the textile designs of Raymond Honeyman
10th August 2010 – 20th March 2011
MoDA’s next exhibition will feature the work of textile designer, Raymond Honeyman. In this digital age, Honeyman’s preoccupation with hand painted pattern stands out as a testament to the enduring significance of meticulous craft-based skill. Honeyman began as a designer of printed textiles, but over the past decade has focussed on the design of needlepoint kits. His refusal to surrender to computer-aided design coincides with a global resurgence of interest in artisanal values. This exhibition is thus particularly timely, affording a rare opportunity to see his original artworks and to gain an insight into the mind of a master colourist.
Honeyman’s trompe l’oeil canvases challenge preconceived notions. From paisley to tartan, the Mikado to Ming, his playful use of design and sophisticated blending of colour bring familiar images into unusual juxtaposition. Pushing the boundaries, his meticulous detail produces a depth and richness in pattern that tests the skill of even the most accomplished maker, with a resulting complexity that puts his work in a category of its own.
Whether a devotee or detractor of the needlepoint kit, this exhibition will be appreciated by anyone who appreciates colour and seeks inspiration in its manipulation.
Raymond Honeyman is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cumbria.
