By 1910, bathrooms were a necessity in middle-class British homes. At this time, people became concerned about good hygiene in the home. Bathrooms with tiled walls and linoleum floors were popular with consumers because they were easy to keep clean. Free-standing baths with exposed legs reduced the accumulation of dust.
Coloured tiles were sometimes used to make the room feel less clinical.
