Stead McAlpin, Printer(s); Stockman, 1951
This cotton textile featuring stylised giraffes was designed by Sylvia Chalmers for Stockman in 1951.
After the drab colours of the Second World War, textile manufacturers offered British consumers a range of bright, modern fabrics that avoided traditional or historical references. Spiky designs and strong colour contrasts became fashionable. Fabrics such as this were especially popular with younger customers.
