Adshead & Smellie, publisher, 1897
This catalogue of hearth suites was published in 1897 for manufacturer Adshead & Smellie.
British houses were heated by coal fireplaces at the turn of the century so fire accessories such as a coal scuttle, a fender and fire irons were essential tools in the home. Accessories were both practical and decorative, and were carefully chosen by home owners.
Fire irons such as these were often displayed in a formal arrangement with their handles resting on the fender. The fender protected the carpet from spitting coal.
