Artistic Japan

Bing, Siegfried, author1889-1890

Artistic Japan was a periodical published from 1888 to 1891 by Siegfried Bing, a Paris art dealer who did much to popularise the art of Japan in the West. It is a monthly illustrated journal of the arts and industries of Japan. Each volume focuses on a different theme, for example ‘Animals in Japanese Art’ or ‘Japanese Pottery’, and contains a review and history of that subject with accompanying illustrative plates. It is likely that Arthur Silver subscribed to this journal in order to use it as reference material for Silver Studio designs. MoDA holds several volumes of the journal as part of The Silver Studio collection; reflecting the Studio's strong interest in Japanese design ideas. They are bound and unbound editions from 1889 to 1890 (incomplete).
