The Poppy
wall covering

designed by Silver Studio; manufactured by Shand Kydd Ltd., about 1900

This wallpaper was designed by the Silver Studio for London-based manufacturer Shand Kydd Ltd in about 1900. The design uses stylised poppy flowers arranged in a rhythmic repeating pattern. Poppy flowers were a popular Art Nouveau motif at the turn of the century. The designer made this fashionable new style appeal to more traditional British tastes by shading the flowers to give them a more naturalistic appearance. This wallpaper was printed by Shand Kydd Ltd, who were famous for their attractive wallpapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
