Silver Studio; Jeffrey & Co., about 1900

This wallpaper was designed by the Silver Studio for manufacturer Jeffrey & Co in about 1900. The design uses interlaced quatrefoil motifs in a repeating pattern. Interweaving patterns such as this are common in Celtic art, suggesting that the wallpaper designer might have been influenced by Celtic artefacts. The ‘Celtic’ look in Britain was inspired by a variety of historical cultures but was faithful to none. It was popular during the early twentieth century when designers such as Archibald Knox used interlaced motifs for his metal work products. See SW800 for the same design in a different colourway.
