Catalogue for Burgess fireplaces

manufactured by R. Burgess and Son Limited - Southall, 1961

In the late 1950s, sales of smokeless fuels like gas and cleaner coals, and the fireplaces which used them, took off. This was partly in response to the Clean Air Act of 1956. But coal effect fireplaces remained popular, in order to maintain the cosy look of the traditional fire. The Burgess fireplaces combined traditional-looking fire with more modern tiled surrounds.
