about 1965

Printed cotton with a design influenced by African-style batiks. The semi-abstract design of mottled and splashed colour is overprinted with large, blue and black, irregular shaped lozenges which have central trefoil and quatrefoil cut-outs resembling clubs and crosses. The early 1960s saw a resurgence of interest in craft-made textiles and a number of designers and makers (in particular Susan Bosonce and Althea McNish) were experimenting with hand-block and discharge printing techniques, similar to those used here, to produce modern designs.
